Ready to hit the road - Route 66, that is.

 Almost a year ago, after an abbreviated summer road trip and the cancellation of two cruises, we decided it was time for us to drive Route 66 again. More than a decade ago, just before Chuck moved to Roswell, we drove Route 66 from Santa Monica to Chicago. In fact, the day after we completed the drive, while we were visiting Columbia, Chuck interviewed for the position that brought us to Roswell and the New Mexico Military Institute - and less than a month later, he had moved.

Back to the topic of the day...since then we have engaged in various planning activities that led us to where we are today - ready to head out in the morning to start this year's adventure.

We are super excited for this year's adventure - and so very grateful to Desi for watching our house and gatos while we are gone. Internet may be sketchy tomorrow, but I will post about our first day as soon as I can.

Celebrity Constellation – Stateroom 7110 The Celebrity Constellation stateroom 7110 is a verandah stateroom with a lot more storage room than one might think.  On the left as you enter you find three doors, each about 18” wide. The first two open from the center to reveal a hanging bar for clothes. The hangers have a peg on top that fits into the ring assembly that rests on the pole. I found this set-up very annoying for a few reasons. For one, I like to use a hanger with clips to dry my swimsuit. Mis-Adventurous Start to our Adventure

 The morning of 20 October dawned clear and cool. We had moved most of our bags to the car the night before, so after the whole showering and dressing thing (and fortified for the drive to Albuquerque with coffee and tea), we said good-bye to the cats (Missy & Foxy) and hit the road.   Talk about a smooth operation! Drive up – smooth. Leaving our car at the long-term lot (we use Fast Park & Relax) – smooth. TSA check-in, boarding, flight to Chicago – smooth. Grabbing a Cuban sandwich for the flight and boarding for Brussels, flight to Brussels – smooth (including people being amenable to changing seats so we could sit together). We were even given dinner, which was a surprise, and which meant we would have our sandwich for later…like about 0500 local time. Day One on Route 66 - Chicago to Springfield, IL

Here we go! We had heard that it is challenging to get a picture of yourself at the "Begin" sign in Chicago, so we went the day before our trip began so we wouldn't have to deal with that frustration as we launched our adventure with a car selfie... The weather was beautiful as we left. We knew it would be getting hot, so we started with windows down for a while. We are not city people, so leaving behind scenes like this was not a hardship.   Drivers in Chicago seem to love their horns, and the driving is definitely more aggressive than we are used to. We soon moved away from an area in which the only way you could see the sky was to look straight up. The sign told us we were on the right track...   First stop...
