Route 66 Day 6 - (6/20) Springfield, MO to Claremore, OK

I am so busy having a good time that I am way behind on updating this! Thankfully, I have a lot of fun pictures, and my husband helps me remember details. We went very non-traditional for our Springfield lodging, staying at the Angler's Lodge. Yes, it was a splurge, but it was a fabulous room and the people were great. We would absolutely stay there again!

Next stop - Gay Parita :) Such a cool place!

So much to see - at eye level, on the floor, and in the rafters!

Old treddle sewing machine - I wouldn't be surprised if it still works.

A sad iron (see this post for information) and a bootjack shaped like an insect...or some other creature. We actually ended up buying a couple of sad irons on this trip. We are going to use them as door stops at our new place :)

I thought this was awesome :)

Lots of cool vehicles...

Old bridges are just cool :)

So is the old curbing...

 Stopping for a look around.

And to take pictures through the windows, since it was closed.

Boots Court was a fun stop...

And we got to meet Debbie D.

I just thought this was cool...

We were looking for the site of a former Harvey House when we happened upon this mural.

Former Harvey House in Joplin, MO has been rehabbed into apartments.

The world needs more historic byways :)

There didn't seem to be a huge "Welcome to Kansas" sign on Route 66, so this will have to do :)

This works, too...yes, those are my toes.

And then...Galena...

More cool signs. YES!

Cool old train! Yes, that is the top of my side mirror at the bottom of the picture. One of these days I will learn how to edit photos.

Any way you look at it, there are cool things to see along the route!

Like this tall dude :)

I had to wait to take this picture because a many with what I thought was a really long selfie stick had the stick raised way high. I later learned that was actually a camera. He was a camera man for a cable series and was traveling with two others...but I am getting ahead of myself. More cool stuff at this first Kansas stop...

When we arrived at Cars on the Route in Galena, the three men we had seen earlier were there. Two with cameras and one walking around who seemed to be orchestrating things. He assured us we wouldn't be in the way and that we should just look around. So we did.

Afterwards, he asked if he had seen us earlier, we said yes and explained that we had taken the train from Albuquerque to Chicago, and after spending a few days there had rented a car to make the Route 66 drive to Santa Monica. He told us about his project and asked if he could interview us. So, we did. Too much fun :)

The inspiration for Mater...

This building was just too cool to ignore...even if I don't have any other information.

Cool Kansas 66 sign :)

On to the Rainbow Bridge, the last of the three March Arch Bridges. This bridge is super cool. You can only drive across it one way, but then you can park and get more pictures.

This didn't come out as nicely as I would have liked. Another reason to go back to Kansas!

Just looking at this makes me feel more relaxed. I can take a deep breath and practically smell the creek and the "green."

When we arrived at the Baxter Springs Museum, Tom came out and (jokingly said) "Hey, we don't allow people from New Mexico in here!" Here is Tom with Dean “Crazy Legs” Walker.

Tom and his team were inside doing more filming. It was fun running into them again and sharing a few more stories. We spent time talking with Dean, who asked us if we knew a man in Roswell. The last name was familiar, so he wrote down his name and the other guy's name plus a short note. Then he told me, "He'll know what that means."

Look what we found!

Dairy King in Commerce, OK This place has such character :)

Hole in the Wall Conoco Station (Allen's Fillin' Station)in Commerce, OK. This is too cool :)

Check out those gas prices!

Next up - Ed Galloway's Totem Pole Park in Chelsea, OK. We stopped here 12 years ago on our first Route 66 trip, and we were so excited to be going back. This place does NOT disappoint! This table is so inviting :)

We had heard they were refurbishing the main totem, and their efforts definitely paid off. This is amazing! Check out how vibrant the colors are an how crisp it looks.

Rather than reflect on each one, I am just going to leave the pictures here for you to enjoy (with a couple of comments here and there).

Is it just me, or does that third guy from the left look an awful lot like the aliens that visited Roswell?

I absolutely love the turtle at the base. She is carrying the world on her back. For perspective, Chuck is 6'5" tall.

Look at that face! She is saying, "I got this."

We headed into Claremore for the night. After checking into our hotel, we went to Main Street Tavern Broken Arrow for Shrimp and Grits...

It was a great dinner to wrap up a great day. Oh, this is half of an order, by the way ;)
