The Amtrak Experience: Stops along the way - Day 1

It didn't take long after pulling out of the station in ABQ until we were away from the city and enjoying the sights.

Lamy is a very short stop. It is a tiny station that has been there a very long time.

Old car that has been dressed up.

The scenery changes regularly as the tracks wind through the desert, into the hills, then into the mountains.

Moving higher in altitude, we transition into the pinon-juniper region.

Heading north of Santa Fe, the train often sounds its whistle and you see cattle, deer, antelope - and apparently bison - run away.

The station in Las Vegas, NM. This is a very short stop, and you can see that getting a centered picture wasn't in the stars for that day. Looking forward to visiting this station as we drive Route 66.

La Castañeda is a former Harvey House located in Las Vegas, NM. It had fallen to ruin but has been restored and looks amazing from the train. We had reservations to stay there on our Route 66 trip, but the hotel canceled them because a movie studio bought out the hotel for a production. We will stay at the nearby Plaza Hotel and hopefully be able to at least walk around the grounds here.

Terrence, our car attendant, took this picture for us during a brief "fresh air" stop in Raton, NM. While most stops are for passengers boarding or detraining only, there are fresh air stops along the way. Ironically, this is the only time that passengers who smoke can step away from the train to do so. If you do get off at a fresh air stop, stay close and be ready to get back on when "All aboard!" sounds. That is not a suggestion that you might want to move back to the train, it is basically a last call and you need to hustle if you don't want to get left behind.

Heading up to Raton Pass, we saw a whole string of these old poles. I love all of the glass insulators.

Almost to the pass...

The train goes through a very long tunnel. I took this because it was there :)

My reflection is almost as clear as the sign :)

Heading into Trinidad...

Love that poster in the middle!

Makes it easy to figure out where we were...

Couldn't help myself. This reminded me of a Push-me Pull-you of Dr. Doolittle fame.

And day one comes to an end.
